I quite like photography!
I got to take a photography class in my final year of high school, and it was a really great experience to say the least. I didn’t have a camera of my own at the time, so my high school provided me with a shared Nikon D50 and a standard 18-50mm lens
The D50 is a really nice DSLR (if not a little old), but it still produced photos that were more than adequate for my work
Just one problem: It wasn’t my camera
We had to sign them in and out, or face the wrath of a VERY angry art teacher…
Choosing a Camera
There are qutie a few different brands that manufacture cameras. However, the choice for me was between 3 of (arguably) the largest:
- Canon
- Nikon
- Sony
Wait, Sony?
Sony?
Back during the Covid pandemic, LONG before I did the photography class, my dad acquired a used Sony α6000 for a work project.
I got to play with it briefly (and I mean play quite literally, I had no idea what I was doing) But something about it was so interesting to me…
So can you guess what camera I picked?
February
Cold and wet, as per usual
Me and one of my friends were visiting local CeX store, just for a look around at things we can’t afford. They had an α6400 in the window, which (despite being quite cheep for what it was) was over-budget. My friend was looking at the phones. His was kind of broken, and was considering one of the Pixels they had.
We’re laughing at something, I don’t remember what.
Then I spot it…
A relatively small white box…
an α6000
Boxed. Body only. In budget
I ask to it, and they bring it over. It’s in really good condition.
I ask about the shutter count.
We don’t know
When I say “I have never made an impulse purchase faster” I mean it
I get it home, check the shutter count.
it’s basically brand new
I combined it with the kit 16-55mm lens gotten from eBay, and boom! I have my own camera!
And let me tell you: She takes nice photos
The First PhotoWalk
Me and that same friend from the story went on a walk a few days later, just taking pictures of whatever we found. It wasn’t anythinf professional, just walking, talking, and taking pictures of thigns we thought looked nice!
Here’s a couple of examples from that outing:
I don’t think I’m a professional by any means, or particularly good it taking photos really. But I enjoy doing it, and thing the results look nice, so that’s good enough for me.
Now for a new lens…
